When you buy a dog or are gifted one the first thing you think of is choosing an appropriate name for the dog. There are certain people who like their dogs to be named after some famous people like Hitler, George or there are some that just like to keep common dog names like spike, max, buddy etc and there are others that name their dogs after food products like cookie and candy.
When you choose your dog names make sure that you choose one that suits the dog. You don’t want to name your poodle killer and have people laugh at your dog. Make sure that you choose a name that you are not embarrassed to tell people or write down on a form when you visit the vet or at a kennel. Keep your dog’s name short and limited to two syllables only. A nice short name will be easy for you to remember and call out and for your dog to distinguish its name from other sounds around him as well. A short name will make it easier for you to train your dog as well later on. Your dog wont have much difficulty learning his own name if you keep repeating it. To check if your dog responds to his name well, and just to see how it sounds, you can try going to the front door and yelling out your dog’s name. If he responds, you think it sounds right and it doesn’t have other people laughing at you then it’s the perfect name for your dog.
Once you have chosen the appropriate name for your dog, you have to make sure he learns it himself. You can call out your dog’s name and if he responds to it give him a reward or just hug him and pet him. You can try this out a few times everyday. Try calling your dog’s name in various situations like when your out on a walk, when he is free and playing with other dogs, when he is lying around the house.
